literarynonsensetitle says it all. inspired by my dearest ash's recent wip dump and i was like Hey i have some wips maybe i should just post them too since i don't plan on finishing them. perhaps look forward to various wip amnesty posts as well? and also please excuse any weird formatting im not fighting with dreamwidth today.
so. I have been meaning to write this post for months. but i simply never got around to it. Why? because i have SO MUCH TO SAY ABOUT THE GENSHIN OST but i genuinely have no idea where to start!!!!!!! so im just gonna wing the format of this post as i go and do some rambling about my fav osts.
( oh boy! here we go! )
i think perhaps i will... go region by region at first and give initial thoughts on each region's ost. and then i'll do separate sections for like character demo osts and version trailers etc etc. WOO!
mondstadt
ahhh... the starter nation... what a comfortable place. and i think its ost reflects this quite well too. i wouldn't say any of the tracks are particularly intense but i think it's fitting since the weight of our journey isn't very Evident at this point to the player. i mean yeah lost sibling and whatnot but it's a fresh adventure! all of the mondstadt city music is PERFECT btw like genuinely. and i wouldn't say i enjoy them as much as the OTHER nations' battle music but mondstadt battle music is still objectively well made and again. like i said. it's not like it's going to be crazy intense battle music at this point! we're just fighting little mobs like slimes and hilichurls. the craziest thing that's walking around in mondstadt are the ruin guards come on. also dragonspine gets its own section.
anyway i think mondstadt's music is a lot like its archon... it's comforting it's largely peaceful it's PLAYFUL even when it does get a bit more intense but like venti it can still be serious and melancholic... thus. Here are the mondstadt osts i enjoy the most.
lone sojourner
aka dawn winery night theme. who doesn't like this one. if mondstadt night theme isn't the one that gets you it's usually this one that makes you go Wow this song is good. the simplicity of the guitar <3
mondstadt starlit
aka one of the mondstadt night themes. shocking! once again mondstadt with the guitars! which you don't get to hear in inazuma or liyue as far as i can remember but anyway i just like this one because... maybe it's the soft drum? the violins? the piano? who knows
rite of battle
okay guys. when i listened to this theme in game the battle never lasted long enough for me to really appreciate it. because when you listen to the opening its like oh okay cool. but then it starts building up and ur like HUH HUH WHUH? and i think that's kind of the case with all mondstadt themes in which they take some time to ramp up but i think this battle theme in particular REALLY pays off the longer you listen to it. also one of the things i love about this piece. i guess i'll just call it the rite of battle leitmotif since it's the first time it appears in the entire ost i think. when you guys listen to this piece you KNOW what im talking about. it's that little battle melody that appears in SOOOO MANY GENSHIN TRACKS i'd love to make a video about it sometime which would require me to listen to every track in the ost but i do Not mind! it's appeared in character demos more than anything i believe but it's also in other battle tracks. So Good guys i love leitmotifs (guy who played undertale voice)
the edge of the prairie
aka MONDSTADT RAIN THEME!!!!!!! guys. do you understand. i wouldn't say it's Different in the sense that it doesn't fit with the rest of mondstadt's music thematically but it just has such a different Emotion to it that you don't really hear otherwise in mondstadt's open world music. it really does make you feel that sort of melancholy of a traveler in the rain in an unknown land and it has this. Tinge of hope to it but mostly it makes me feel like a resolute sopping wet beast. i just don't know how else to describe it.
Last but not least.
the outlander who caught the wind
ohh man. the track that encapsulates the entire mondstadt chapter. the genshin main theme.... the part that feels like when you meet the knights and become an honorary knight..... the magic of meeting venti.. dvalin's attack and the abyss it literally walks you through every step!!!!!! and then the peaceful ending like venti sending you off to your next nation!
speaking of NEXT NATION.

wow. liyue music. i wish i could speak more accurately on the cultural inspirations of liyue music other than just saying Sounds Nice but i do not hold this knowledge. anyway liyue just feels so..... like it's prosperous but heavy with history whereas mondstadt's music feels centered around the people and the freedom granted to them by barbatos. so it really makes sense that liyue's history is more heavily felt considering that they have that sentiment of "our god has walked alongside us since the beginning of our history" so.
obviously every nation has had amazing music but going to liyue from mondstadt from the first time has such a Shift idk how exactly to describe it like obviously the distinction between the more traditional european orchestra to the fusion of chinese music with western orchestra elements really makes you go Wow. and the first time i heard the battle music genuinely i was Stunned like i wasn't really active on twt at the time but on instagram of all the tracks i couldve posted about. i posted liyue's battle music. which really speaks to how good it is tbh. i think it encapsulates this sort of Rising Action part of the story where it's more intense but it still feels so hopeful and heroic and in a sense magical? the fast pace and the lightness of the flutes and just. okay i can't ramble on for too long but it's just So Good. also erhu <3 i heart the erhu.

albedo... my good friend albedo. i remember when the chalk prince and the dragon came out and i watched the trailer and whatnot and i was like. holy shit this is pretty cool! because i LOVE dragonspine and i love it even more now that ive familiarized myself with the lore. but when i saw albedo for the first time i was like. this guy seems boring. i don't really care about this guy. and his in-game model kind of sucks. and that last one is still true but ANYWAY
i soon realized i was Wrong and that he is in fact so interesting and cool and sweet but also fucked up. like i genuinely dont understand people that don't think albedo is interesting i get if his lore personally doesn't interest you but to deny that he's a complex and well-written character is like. Are we playing the same game???? anyway i'm so obsessed with him i love his abilities i love his voice acting i love his personality and how he cares for klee and doesn't really know or understand why people think hes a charming guy but he really is. when he laughed during the midsummer island adventure event i wanted to eat my phone and when he/fakebedo/whoever the fuck did the Right, Traveler? thing i wanted to eat a brick and when he did the Did you? thing i wanted to drink lava. i was like this is so fucked up and evil and twisted and i am in love with you. and when he stabbed whopperbedo i was like [guy with problems voice] ohhhhhhhhhhhhhh wow. that was hot. wow i cannot be making every snippet as long as this one. i just have many things to say

:/ we already knew this. anyone who knows me knows this. so i won't spend too much time on certain aspects of this one since i've already done so in multiple people's dms LOL on one hand im like wow this guy's lore is so fucking interesting. it's fucked up and sad like i'm really hoping it gets properly elaborated upon in-game OUTSIDE of artifacts and other description stuff because i really want to See what happened even if it's not the whole thing. like at least give us a 2d cutscene where we get to see his past self!!!!! also i really want the long hair thing to be canon it's just so good. like it not only makes sense considering his current haircut (like have you guys seen that video where a kid gets their braid cut off where the braid begins it LITERALLY looks like scaramouche's hair.) but in a symbolic sense as well it's like holyyy shit when he distances himself from his past and origins etc etc. he has such a fucked up sense of identity and purpose. wow. also i like that he's an asshole who kills people i won't lie i don't really give a shit about teppei. i just hope mihoyo doesn't make us wait for another insanely extended period of time i've been so patient i literally restarted playing the game for him. like i think i've said it before but literally it was like. [sees preinstallation ad] wow this looks very pretty and interesting! ill preregister for the game! [plays it a few weeks after the official release and forgets about it] [sees scaramouche] holy fuck i have to play again so i can play this event.
also i don't care if he wasn't made in raiden's image he's trans because i said so. also it's funny that the game says that but they literally look so similar they even have the same eyes and hair streaks like come on they look like family.
for the sake of not making this list insanely long i will simply stop my genshin section here but shoutout to the other characters i greatly enjoy! scaramouche and albedo just happen to be my 2pick.

disclaimer... i got into this fandom when i was like. ten LMFAO so i might misremember stuff but yeah.
kano shuuya
shocking....... another character with insane identity issues who does some fucked up stuff but. Oh wait pause this is so funny i was like maybe i should listen to his character song while writing this because it's so. oougfuhg. BUT THEN IT CAME ON SPOTIFY SHUFFLE BY ITSELF on a playlist with easily 100+ songs???? sol winning moments.
anyway kano is this guy. he's a teen actually he's seventeen years old (say the name) and in kagerou project the main characters all have Eye Powers. which just means they have powers and their eyes turn red when they use said power. and get this kano's power is called Deceiving Eyes which allows him to change how people perceive him so if he wants he can entirely transform into someone else given that he's familiar enough to impersonate them. like how much more obvious can you be with IDENTITY ISSUES.... he's not an antagonist but he's sly and playful to hide his true feelings and he Does do some pretty fucked up stuff. for example his adoptive older sister wanted to investigate some fucked up experiments their dad was doing and he disguised as her to cover for her at school and ended up getting into an argument that ended up being this other character's last impression of her before she died. at least i'm pretty sure that's what happened. but she died because she sacrificed herself because her dad's experiments were done with the intention of reviving his deceased wife by sacrificing others through the entity that gave them their eye powers. ITS COMPLICATED but then kano swears to take revenge but the entity (which is a snake) does an uno reverse card and is like actually ill kill your family anyway if you don't do what i tell you to. so basically he gets blackmailed into disguising as other things and one of his forms is a black cat that leads these two other characters (children) to their deaths and gets them stuck in a death loop. im sorry kagepro is awful to explain. anyway here's his song i quite enjoy it
how convenient that it matches the color scheme of my journal! and if u don't feel like listening to the song then just take this lyric snippet that i think sums him up pretty well
this isn't nearly as cool/fucked up if you don't really know his character and also because it is a japanese to english translation. but like Trust Me Bro

- 2024 note: deeply sorry to liyue and onward. honestly this is something i theoretically Could continue with since i still absolutely love the genshin ost but it's like. it will take too much brainpower that i do not see myself having for a dedicated full post. and also it will end up being really long. anyway if i had to choose a favorite nation for battle themes: liyue. favorite nation for general overworld themes: cheating and saying both inazuma and sumeru. like they really nail it in terms of Beautiful melancholy and atmospheric music. sumeru's marana themes are especially insane to me. they injected that same sort of alarm into me as when i first heard raiden's battle theme (the one where she first brings you to the plane of euthymia and the music starts with a heartbeat and unsettling synth drones). i did play through fontaine (enjoyed the music there too) and like a Bit of natlan at my friend's insistence (Still enjoyed the music but obviously haven't played enough for it to stick in my head). maybe snezhnaya (or scarabedo content.) will bring me back into the game because god knows i am abnormal about harbingers and i think they could do some really cool stuff for snezhnaya's ost just going off of vibes from the lore we've gotten.

- 2024 note: sorry women. never got to elaborate on them. there are definitely more characters i couldve added to this but if i were to remake this post i'd just keep it simple so i dont ramble for 5000 years and use up all my energy on said rambling. anyway my 2024 character additions would definitely be marcille and mithrun! (READING BACK IN FEBRUARY I FORGOT FUCKING SUNDAY HSR) i think i mostly just wanted to go insane/try and sway people into playing end roll because nobody fucking knows end roll (this is a lie it's like Bigger than expected but still a very small fandom especially internationally) (Play end roll guys it's free) but i still probably wouldve spoiled a bunch anyway so. i guess it was just about going insane.
